"Breaking the Drought: How Virat Kohli's Wait for a Test Century Ended After 3 Long Years"
THE EPIC COMEBACK
To watch Virat Kohli bat in India in the last three years or so has been a timely reminder about the greatness of sport: how it can embarrass even a top star and make him re-learn the art of batting in some ways. And how the absence of first-class cricket can tear a hole in the fabric of an uber-confident batsman. There he was popping up across India or recently in Bangladesh in Tests, trying to find a method that works for him against spin. Without the luxury of domestic games, he was learning on the go, so to speak.
India vs Australia, 4th Test:
Virat Kohli ended a 3-year wait for a Test hundred as the former captain dominated the Australian bowling attack in Ahmedabad. It was Kohli's 75th international hundred and 28th Test century. The wait finally ended, the wait of 1204 days ended on Sunday, March 12 as Virat Kohli hit his first Test century after 3 years. The former captain got to his 28th Test hundred, his first since in the longest format of the game since November 2019 as he led India's strong reply to Australia's mammoth 480-run total on Day 4 of the 4th and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
It all came together on a pleasant afternoon in Ahmedabad, with a strong crowd chanting his name and egging him on. Lots of people were cheering for him, but he celebrated calmly by taking off his helmet and kissing his wedding ring.
Kohli had to be patient and careful while he was playing because it wasn't easy to score runs on the pitch. The former captain lost his overnight batting partner Ravindra Jadeja early in the day's play but he put his head down and managed just 29 runs in the first session.
Steve Smith's handling of the Australian resources and his field settings were on the point as he tried to cut the flow of runs. However, Kohli did not get carried away by the need to get to a milestone as he was content with the pace at which he was getting the runs. Kohli added 84 runs with wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat for the 5th wicket but the youngster was out for 44 right after the Lunch break.
He made 96 runs and looked calm and confident.
PAST THREE YEARS
Three-and-half years of barrenness, three-and-half years of slowly swelling criticism, the losing of the captaincy crown, the headlines that screamed ‘King Kohli dethroned’, a mental struggle to accept the loss of his stature, a brief apathy towards the game, a falling out of love for the game even, but the tide turned with acceptance of his state. But sometimes even really good players can have a hard time and need to learn new things to get better. Kohli has had some tough times in the past few years, but he worked hard and improved his game. The fangs were replaced with smiles. It took a while to get used to, but the runs began to come. First in the white-ball cricket, and now, finally, in whites.
Notably, Kohli also had to wait for 1020 days to go from No. 70 to No. 71 but there has been no looking back since.
Since then, Kohli has hit 4 more hundreds, 3 of them coming in ODIs.
